ABOUT OTD

Opposable Thumb Design, LLC (OTD) is a product and graphic design consultancy based in New York City. We offer aesthetic and functional design solutions for products as widely varied as home goods, toys, furniture, public sculpture, point-of-purchase displays, and original product concepts. We also offer graphic design services, corporate identity development, illustration creation, product packaging, and catalog design.

OTD draws from a pool of award-winning product and graphic designers on a per-project basis. This method not only helps keep overall project costs low, it also allows for efficient access as needed to a multiplicity of available skill sets and styles.

Despite the modern veneer of technology and the recent development of "virtual lives", we are still human beings, thinking apes who derive comfort, pleasure and reassurance from the tactile and the tangible. Physical objects speak directly to our physical selves. We still seek things to hold, to cradle, to lean against, to touch to our skin. Despite the power and convenience of our technological advances, you can't replace a chair, a house, spoons or a stuffed animal. We believe that people still need tangible, quality products to live their lives, perhaps now more than ever.

OTD brings a fresh point of view to the products we make. We add innovation, utility, wit, humor, approachability and beauty. No matter the price point, the added value of an attractive, engaging, unexpected and appealing design will only strengthen the personal relationship between the individual and the object. Opposable Thumb Design creates beautiful, clever- and most importantly- human stuff.

MISSION

  1. We believe that art and design can and should be used to enrich the lives of everyone.

  2. We believe that design should be used to create lives of awareness; to "recover the sensation of life".

  3. We design and produce well-designed, well-made, insightful products regardless of price or pedigree.

  4. We believe the conversation between art, design and commerce is ongoing. We strive to continually be influenced by changes and developments in art, design, fashion, music, literature, academia, science, technology, politics and current events.

  5. We seek to use and encourage domestic manufacturing whenever feasible.

  6. We seek to use and encourage environmentally responsible manufacturing methods, materials and product lifecycles.
